Ashvin Harrison Australian, b. 1984
“Art is everywhere from billboards to sports jerseys, the backs of school books to fine art museums. What constitutes as great art depends on the context of presentation and the all important viewer interpretation. The realisation of never knowing what will be considered a great artwork has driven me to explore the fusions and boundaries of self taught fine art skill, unique creative processes, contemporary subject focus and an unpredictable abstract exploration driven by emotional reaction.
The world is seen in lines, shapes and colour, though felt through emotional reaction. Such, my unique charcoal, acrylic and oil artwork creations present the narrative of realistic reality and emotional reaction within. The realistic aspect of creation I explore with charcoal dust on canvas. The emotional reaction to the world I express with every colour I can see. The skilled aim yet unpredictability of my splashes of paint over the precision of charcoal is life.”
Ashvin Harrison is a self-taught Australian artist born in 1984 in Elizabeth, Australia. He lives and works on the Sunshine Coast. Since becoming a professional artist in 2017, he has developed Motusrealism: edible coconut charcoal powder brushed onto gessoed canvas with photorealistic precision, then poured, splashed, and layered with acrylic and oil so movement and emotion sit against the monochrome figure.
His subjects range across dancers, music, animals, and everyday icons. The work is driven by questions of the human condition, purpose, and feeling — including how he channels lived experience, among them misophonia and PTSD, into the studio. Beyond painting he composes orchestral and ensemble music.
His paintings are held in private and corporate collections across more than 40 countries. His work has appeared in magazines, television, news features, and catalogs, and has been seen in connection with major cultural moments including a portrait collaboration tied to Ash Barty and Rado during the Australian Open 2022. He is presented by The Wall Art Gallery in Miami, including presentations around Art Basel Week Miami.
