She is seen from behind, held in a moment of perfect balance: risen onto the points of her blue slippers, arms opened wide, the long muscles of her back drawn in fine shades of grey. Her dark hair is pinned in a neat bun. We never see her face, and we don't need to. Everything she feels lives in the line of her shoulders and the soft curve of her wrists.
Her tutu isn't fabric but motion. It explodes outward in thousands of droplets of sapphire, turquoise and deep navy, laced with a crystalline sparkle that changes color as the light moves across it, while long ribbons of blue sweep around her in a wide arc, as if the music itself had become visible. Through that current drifts a small flight of blue butterflies, circling her like partners in the dance, guiding each change and inspiring the next movement.
Then look down. The shadow her dance casts on the ground below is not quite a dancer's. In it, her wings are hinted, as though the butterfly she is becoming is already there, waiting at her feet. It is the painting's quiet secret, and once seen it changes everything above it. Standing eight feet tall, Crystal Butterfly Dancer is a portrait of grace in the middle of transformation, a dancer caught between who she is and what she is about to become.
