A makimono — unroll right to left, section by section. Closed it is a slim 14 x 3 in; open it runs 212 in. Couple at the water, boats, a city labeled DREAM, a sun, trees, LOVE in red at the end. Gallery text: not a kakemono (hanging scroll). An unfolding journey. This is Love the scroll, not LOVE the ink.
This is the object, not only the picture. You live with it closed on a shelf, then open it when you want the story. Seventeen feet of travel: water, city, sun, LOVE. For a collector who wants Japan as a thing you handle, not only a thing you hang. At this price it is also the way into the work.
