Gravity is usually something we fight. In this painting it becomes something a woman rests into, and that is the quiet revolution of Grace of Gravity.
The work began with a real sitter, a woman who posed at forty-nine. She is shown from the waist up, shoulders drawn back, chest open, chin lifted, her face raised toward a light we cannot see. The body is rendered honestly and tenderly, with its true weight and softness, and without apology. Nothing here is hidden or corrected. Her confidence doesn't come from looking younger or lighter. It comes from being entirely at home in herself.
Above her, the mood changes completely. A wide, wheeling arc of sky blue, gold, coral, blush and cream sweeps across the canvas, threaded with navy and gray, spinning out into ribbons and fine droplets. Drifting through this current are pale, moon-like spheres, their surfaces pitted like cratered stone. They suggest time and its cycles: the phases a life moves through as it slowly becomes itself.
What makes the painting so moving is the conversation between its two halves. Below, everything has weight, solid and grounded in deep charcoal. Above, everything floats. Rather than choosing between them, the painting holds both at once, as if being anchored and being free were simply the same state seen from two sides. The arc of color doesn't fly off wildly. It travels in a single sweeping direction, almost like an orbit, a freedom that has found its rhythm.
At forty by thirty inches, it holds a wall with real presence. From a distance you see one sweep of blue and gold rising from a still, sculptural form. Up close, small events appear: the texture of the moons, the soft shifts of tone across the skin, the drips that fall just beyond the edge of the color. It is a portrait of beauty that ripens rather than fades, and a reminder that what holds us down can also be what holds us up.
