An 18th-century painting, Portrait of a Lady by Italian artist Giuseppe Ghislandi, looted by the Nazis from Jewish dealer Jacques Goudstikker during World War II, has resurfaced after more than 80 years. The artwork was unexpectedly spotted in photos from a real estate listing for a seaside home near Mar del Plata, Argentina. Dutch experts confirmed the image matched records in the “Lost Art” database, tracing its last known appearance to Switzerland in 1946 with a Nazi fugitive. When Argentine police raided the property earlier this month, however, the painting had vanished—replaced by a tapestry on the same wall. Goudstikker’s heirs, led by Marei von Saher, continue their decades-long effort to recover pieces from his collection of more than 1,100 works stolen during the war.
